God Is with Us in Dark Times

Psalm 23:4 - Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Genesis 39:1-23

The life of Joseph teaches important principles about challenging times. Here are three of the lessons we can learn from the adversities he faced:

1. Difficulties will continue until God’s purpose is accomplished. In Joseph’s case, God’s plan was to prepare him to rescue his family as well as the nation of Egypt from famine. In order to ready Joseph for a position of authority and responsibility, God placed him in an important Egyptian household as a slave. There, in difficult circumstances, Joseph could learn key lessons needed for the future. Not only did he acquire valuable skills, but his faith and relationship with the Lord were also strengthened. God still operates that way so we will be equipped to accomplish the work He has planned for us (Eph. 2:10).

2. We learn more in the dark than we do in the light. Besides discovering the Lord’s faithfulness, Joseph learned how to discern God’s presence, reject temptation, and handle any position, whether respected or lowly. The lessons and principles of Scripture truly become “ours” only after they have been tested and proven reliable.

3. What we learn in the darkness, we are to share in the light. Joseph openly shared his faith and knowledge from God when he interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams (Gen. 41:15-16). He did not let imprisonment stop him from helping others (40:1-23). What we learn in our trials is to be offered to those who are suffering.

Nobody looks for adversity, but hard times seem to find us often enough. Instead of fearing hard circumstances, we can trust God and embrace His plan, knowing He uses trials for His glory and our gain.

Let FEAR Bow

Fear is a spirit and its influence and control is subject to our will. Fear has no power over you unless allow it.  Fear only has a right to oppress, hinder, terrify because you chose to agree with its deceptive thoughts, words, feelings and images. James 4:7 -admonishes us to submit to God. Resist the devil (fear) and he will flee from you.

Matthew 16:19 - I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind (declare to be improper and unlawful) on earth must be what is already bound in heaven; and whatever you lose (declare lawful) on earth must be what is already loosed in heaven.

      Jeremiah 17:5-8 - Thus says the Lord:

“Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength,
Whose heart departs from the Lord. NIV - Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord.

RESULTS....
-  For he shall be like a shrub (bush) in the desert,
- And shall not see when good comes, NIV they will not see prosperity when it comes.
- But shall inhabit (dwell) in the parched places in the wilderness (desert)
- In a salt land which is not inhabited. AMP in an uninhabited salt land

 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord.
RESULTS....

- For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, (Spirit of God)
- And will not fear[a] when heat comes;
- But its leaf will be green,
- And will not be anxious in the year of drought,
- Nor will cease from yielding fruit.

SOME NEGATIVE TRUTHS ABOUT FEAR

1 John 4:18 - There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.

Isaiah 41:10 - Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’

Proverbs 29:25 - The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe.

·         Fear LIMITS God's ABILITY in your life

·         Fear is an assault to God's Sovereignty - Integrity - Essence - Nature

·         Fear is the evidence of BONDAGE - BONDAGE results in fear

·         Fear undermines God's TRUTH - His WORD

·         Fear discredits the work of redemption - An assault to the ESSENCE of CHRIST

·         Fear makes God a Liar

THE NEGATIVE OBJECTS OF FEAR

v  Fear of the devil, his cohorts and works - kingdom of darkness

v  Fear of man - Spouse; Supervisor;

v  Fear of fear itself

v  Fear of death

v  Fear of Success

v  Fear of different human phenomenon e.g.: height - losing your Job; being poor..

v  Fear of God's wrath - judgment  

v  Fear of animals - insects - other creatures

v  Fear of darkness

v  Fear of being hurt - abused - ashamed - killed - driving - sleeping - water etc...

THE 4 MAIN CAUSES OR SOURCES OF FEAR

1.    THE ARM OF FLESH - HUMAN ABILITIES - When one exhausts his human abilities - dead end - no hope in human strength - no one to turn to - No help from any man.

2.    INFORMATION - Negative sources of information as it naturally appears - Doctors diagnosis - law suit - threats - bad news - termination etc

3.    FIVE SENSES - Your five senses and its reactions. Sight - Hear - Smell - Feel - Taste - Touch (Eye; Nose; Ear; Mouth; Hand)

4.    DEMONIC IMAGERY - Imagery produced in the mind by demon spirits. (Day dreaming - Dreams (Nightmares) etc
